I’m Allister Freeman, a professional Hampshire wedding photographer with many years’ experience capturing weddings in a natural style across Hampshire. I’ve photographed with couples from a variety of cultures and faiths, in all kinds of interesting locations – from the traditional to the downright quirky, and everything in between.
If you’re thinking about a wedding in Hampshire, you’re well and truly spoilt for choice in terms of locations and venues. Hampshire really is the perfect mix of landscapes: coast, countryside and city.
Getting lost in nature is easy in Hampshire, due in part to the fact that The New Forest sits so beautifully inside the county. Planning a summer wedding in Hamphire? Picture your guests naturally photographed sipping champagne aside a river in the heart of a national park at a stunning wedding venue like The Mill at Gordleton. Got winter wedding in mind? Treat yourselves like royalty at Burley Manor in Ringwood as you and your wedding guests dine between high-ceiling wooden beam walls and peer out over a deer sanctuary.
There’s something magical to be said of all seasons in the New Forest; the photography of the vivid purple backdrops of the heathlands in autumn to a carpet of bluebells in spring. Match the intimacies of a natural backdrop, with those cherished and candid photographs that happen during a wedding day – this is the drive for me as a wedding photographer.
It’s no wonder future bride and grooms from around the country flock to get married in the New Forest, where unspoilt woodland, river valleys and traditional cobbled villages offer that wild and romantic backdrop that feels plenty removed from the bustling towns and cities that sit along the same stretch of coast.
And oh to talk about the coast. What Hampshire lacks in long sandy beaches (characteristic of it’s West Sussex and Dorset neighbours) it makes up for in charming coastal personality. Marinas, ports, harbours, and quays - you’re never too far from a sailing hotspot, from harbourside buzz and traditional maritime heritage. Hampshire has a rich naval history, with Portsmouth being one of the three operating bases in the UK for the Royal Navy. At the historic dockyard, you can walk aboard the HMS Victory, the Navy’s most famous warship and Britain’s first iron-hulled battleship, the HMS Warrior.

For landlubbers who’d rather get their feet down to a busy street than get them wet, Portsmouth and Southampton, Hampshire’s largest cities, are both cultural hubs. Music venues, cathedrals, castles, art galleries, rich literary connections and a music festival that attracts more than 150,000 people to the county every year. For an unforgettable intimate wedding ceremony, couples can marry in Southsea castle, photographed overlooking the Solent. (If you’re Pompey through and through, you could even toast your future together with a beer from The Southsea Brewing Co. found within the walls of the castle itself!).
My wedding photo style is often called ‘reportage’ or ‘documentary wedding photography', and it’s a style and approach to weddings that really lends itself to storytelling, to the natural, human moments.
Lovers of all things literary will be in bookworm heaven in Hampshire – the celebrated residing place of Jane Austen. Visitors can stroll around the renowned author’s home and gardens in Chawton and feel inspired in the space where she lived and wrote in the final 8 years of her life.
I’m sure many have grown up dreaming of a wedding like something found the pages of Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility, and with the stunning locations on offer in Chawton and it’s surrounding villages, this can be a dreamy reality. Chawton House itself, a central feature of the traditional village, originally belonging to Austen’s brother, is a breathtaking choice for a wedding.
A walk under orchard trees to an Elizabethan library frequented by literary royalty would make for an unforgettable day. Capturing the light inside the walls of the stunning gardens, or in the oak-panelled library would be a documentary wedding photographer’s dream.
I have been fortunate to have already been commissioned as a Hampshire documentary wedding photographer at some beautiful weddings around the county. It’s the authenticity of these untouched buildings in the picturesque little villages, nearby cities like Winchester, and indeed most of rural Hampshire that really bring documentary or reportage style wedding photography to life.
The wedding photos don’t need to be staged, or faked when the backdrop has such historic originality. I get in the action and tell the story of your day without intruding, posing or demanding. Whether we’re vibing off of the culture of the city, capturing the character of the coast, or chasing the sunset in a national park.
